Implicit derivation in Elementary optimization
Main Article Content
Abstract
Abstract. We characterize the nature of some applied optimization problems that are studied in elementary calculus. We use such characteristics to determine geometric and analytical relationships between implicit curves involved in such problems. From these relationships, we build a procedure for their resolution using implicit derivation. We discuss its benefits, shortcomings, and pedagogical difficulties, and we qualitatively compare it with the traditional optimization procedure with one variable.
